Master in Conflict Studies and Peacebuilding (MA CSP)

The “Master in Conflict Studies and Peacebuilding” is a four-semester study program that focuses on linking research and practice. It aims to provide students with a broad understanding of peace and conflict studies, while at the same time familiarizing them with the practical fields of peacebuilding and conflict management.

Students learn fundamental concepts, theories and methods in research on peace, conflict, and violence combining perspective of political theory, comparative politics, and international relations. They investigate the actors, causes and dynamics of conflicts as well as the practices of conflict mediation and peacebuilding. They study local state-society relations as well as international and global interrelations. The program combines qualitative and quantitative methods in the analysis of concrete conflicts and peace processes.

The curriculum features strong practical components. It integrates practical experiences and expertise in conflict analysis, conflict transformation, and peacebuilding. Students learn to apply academic findings and methodological tools to practical challenges and approaches in peacebuilding. Practitioners present their organizations and work methods in a regular lecture series. Seminars provide insights into practice-oriented instruments – for example, in project management, program evaluation methods, or academic policy consulting.

The MA program is hosted by the University’s Institute for Social Science and affiliated with the Centre for Democracy and Peace Research (ZeDF).
